Spreading the word about our unique "Mettle without Metal" training and training the American Mustang! HorseTenders trying to make a difference, one horse at a time!
Many wonder why Mustangs and why New Hampshire. A not so uncommon question as was recently asked, " you are such terrific trainers, college educated, again, fabulous trainers and hard workers, you have so much potential…… Why are you still here?"
Well, the first answer is obvious. We really do care about the Mustangs and their training. We want to provide New England with a viable source for well trained and family friendly Mustangs. We want to ensure that the Mustangs we train NEVER get returned to the BLM or end up at rescues like our friends at Ever After Mustang Rescue!! Do not get me wrong, these two places are doing their very best, life happens and they step in to do their part and pick up where some owners give up. But our goal is to put Ever After Mustang Rescue out of business! We want the Mustangs to stay with their original adopters and live the dream, happily ever after.
As a family run and operated business, HorseTendersLLc has enough work to keep us busy with retraining horses, starting horses & foundation training, trimming, doing lessons, taking care of our sale herd, running a working farm and going to school while maintaining our non-equine oriented jobs that bring in the funds to subsidize all these efforts. Sometimes when you know, in your heart, you can make a difference; you are compelled to make the effort and simply quit talking about it and just DO IT!
We stay because, not only is this our slice of paradise, but because this is where we are needed! There are no other horse trainers doing what HorseTenders trainers are doing anywhere around! Those that have sought out our training and guidance have walked away refreshed. They again believe that gentleness and caring are compatible with owning and riding!!
Now about our "Last Chance Mustangs". Over 40 of you came to witness something truly unique, and over 40 you walked away changed forever. No exaggeration, the emails have come back! Your support, photos and encouraging words will help provide loving homes for these mustangs.
This 6 year old mustang mare had been passed up at 3 adoptions! She was on her way to no where. She is beautifully put together. She is out of the teenage years and mature. She stands about 14 hands, and sturdily built. She is brave, currently living with 3 bachelors, alas no roses. Trainer Kris Kokal untangled her mane and gave her a great rub down for her first touch! No chasing, running away or terror in this girl's eyes. Just sincere gratitude. Currently she has had her front hooves picked up and is approachable without running away!
Personally one of my favorite mustangs! This young mustang was not what we intended to pick up as a "Last Chance" mustang. He is only 3 and perfect! His story is that he was gelded 8 weeks ago, but did not recover well. He lost almost 100 pounds and he too was set to be sent back to a forever holding facility; never to have the opportunity to be adopted by anyone. The men that run the BLM facility in Ewing simply begged us to give him a chance. They had fallen for this tenacious survivor during his recovery and wanted something more for the amicable fellow.
We are calling him "Scout" right now, because one of the clinic attendees noticed he was the one out in front , putting himself between the people and his fellow mustangs. He is always the first to greet us and he has been haltered and lead around the pens! He wants to be tame, he wants to have a job. Trainer Nik Kokal has been his leader into the human and humane horse world. Now Scout is following!!
He will grow into those terrifically long legs and continue to fill out over the next 4 years! He will be a great horse.
Yes, that is a heart you see on his forehead! Yes, those are two swirls you see in black in the middle of that heart! Super friendly horse. He has groomed all four of his herd mates daily, even the mare. This guy floats when he runs, he such a pretty mover. He is currently the most skittish mustang, but also is the one that watches every movement the trainers make while working the other mustangs. He likes trainer Jenny Kokal and boy does she like him!
He is absorbing it all, and when he is ready he will give his whole heart up. This type of mustang is the "prove it" to me kind. Prove to me you will not hurt me and I will return the favor.
He has been touched by all the trainers, but has not been convinced that being haltered is in his best interest. YET! Come by and watch how the HorseTenders trainer’s magic transforms this beautiful steed into a willing and trusting partner!
"OH MY" is all I can say about this poster boy for mustangs.
Intelligent, deep, big boned, and a stellar example of what it means to be a mustang.
He just gave it all up for the trainers. He will stand to be haltered, he is leadable in the pens. He stands and does not run away when the other mustangs decide someone has approached too quickly. He just looks you straight in the eye and says, bring me more! I will do it, what is next?
The trainers have decided that he is a caregiver, with giving being the key word here. He is so soft and wants to figure out what we are asking. He lets us approach from the back, which is huge at this point!
This guy is waiting for his forever home! He will not disappoint.
Thank you to all who attended the first clinic. Thank you to the photographers that so generously shared their work. Thank you to the trainers, who will make a difference for all horses; proving over and over that thoughtful gentle training can be done with mustangs. Together, we hardy Yankees, can make a difference in the horse world.
We hope you will come and join us during our next two Mustang Project clinics, 10 April & 23 May,to witness the transformation of these mustangs into partners that are ready to share a commitment of true trust and respect for their owner as they become confident & safe trail ready horses.
